A review is made of tribe Dimorphandreae and a new key is provided for the five genera belonging to it. The genus Brandzeia Baill. from Madagascar is discarded as it is founded on a mixture of different other genera. In the past insufficient attention has been paid to three characters which distinctly count in generic distinctions in this tribe, viz. the occurrence of pellucid glands in the leaves and flowers, whether the leaflets are alternate or opposite, and whether the floral parts are inserted on a epigynous, cup-shaped receptacle or whether this is absent. The genus Sympetalandra is found to be quite distinct from Erythrophleum, several characteristics remind more of Mora. The genus Sympetalandra is redefined and a key is provided for the distinction... |

Abstract A field study of the floral biology of Victoria amazonica (Poepp.) Sowerby (Nymphaeaceae) was made for comparison with the many studies made in cultivated plants, of Victoria in the past. In the study areas in the vicinity of Manaus, four species of Dynastid beetles were found in flowers of V. amazonica, three of the genus Cyclocephala and one of Ligyrus. The commonest species of beetle proved to be a new species of Cyclocephala and was found in over 90 percent of the flowers studied. The flowers of V. amazonica attract beetles by their odour and their white colour on the first day that they open. The beetles are trapped in the flower for twenty-four hours and feed on the starchy carpellary appendages. Observations were made of flower temperature,... |

The centre of distribution of the Naucleeae is Malesia and Asia, there are but a few African and Madagascan representatives. The revision of the group for Flora Malesiana entailed an extensive nomenclatural evaluation and typification of the genera (Bakhuizen van den Brink Jr., 1970). This has been followed by detailed taxonomic investigations and a re-evaluation of the tribal and generic limits. The Naucleeae, as conceived by K. Schumann (1891), have mostly been considered a highly natural group (Verdcourt, 1958) and have even been raised to family status (Airy Shaw, 1973). Bremekamp (1966) has been the only botanist ever to question the homogeneous nature of the Naucleeae. However, after re-examination of materials of most representatives of all genera... |

The present study was initiated a few years ago by Dr. R. Grolle (Jena) who discovered that Acrolejeunea (Spruce) Schiffn. was probably the correct name for a tropical liverwort genus to which in this century the name Ptychocoleus Trev. was applied. Since replacing the name Ptychocoleus by Acrolejeunea would necessitate a considerable number of nomenclatural changes, I was asked to reexamine the taxonomy of the group. I soon found that Ptychocoleus as traditionally understood is heterogeneous and consists of two well-defined genera: Acrolejeunea (Spruce) Schiffn. and Schiffneriolejeunea Verd. (Gradstein 1974a). In order to determine their taxonomic affinities, I decided to review the generic subdivision of the subfamily Ptychanthoideae (Lejeuneaceae) to... |

Buergersiochloa was described by Pilger in 1914 with B. bambusoides as the only species. A second species was added by S. T. Blake in 1946. Very little is known about this genus; the plants appear to be very rare in lowland primary forests of New Guinea and only 11 collections are presently known, nine of which were directly available for this study, while of a tenth extensive descriptions and drawings have been published. As was already pointed out by Pilger Buergersiochloa is evidently related to Olyra Linné. Phytogeographically this is very interesting, as Olyra belongs to the Olyreae, a tribe of the Bambusoideae practically restricted to the forests of Central- and South America. Only O. latifolia Linné is found also in Africa and Madagascar (probably... |

The mating act in Gephyromantis liber and in other species of this genus differs from all other mating behaviour patterns known in Anura. The male settles with the ventral side of his thighs on the shoulders of the female, and oviposition starts without delay. The assumption is made that the femoral glands of the male play a rôle in the short mating contact. G. liber is a small arboreal frog, which is widely distributed in the Malagasy central Highlands. During the rainy season the eggs are deposited in a gelatinous mass on leaves overhanging shady small shallow puddles, in which the hatching larvae drop. The embryo does not develop external gills, and hatches by the time the spiracle and the horny beak are present. The tooth formula of the full grown... |
